WINDOWS XP system file missing/Auto reboot?

A few days back when i tried to restart my system having win XP, it displayed the message:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Also, these files were present in c:\windows\repair

As instructed at microsoft website and at many other websites, I copied them from repair to config. But when I restarted my computer, it did not display any error message but after loading some files it automatically reboots.

Can someone tell me the cause and remedy for this?

Thx.

i think you are going to have to reformat and reinstall your operating system, sorry. you will need either your xp disc or if your pc has a recovery console on the hard drive you will need to use this to reformat and reinstall. if you are using the xp disc you will also need to install all the drivers for your pc after the xp in reinstalled

restore your system to the date just before that started to happen and it will be ok .

- start/programs/accessories/system tools/ system restore-
