Help with windows xp problam !!!?

My computer got a problem, when the windows start up screen appear after few seconds the screen go dark. i tried to boot the windows from the safe mode. but I cant go inside the windows after the windows welcome screen comes. the screen go dark again.

What can i do to bring my windows again? I have the windows xp recovery CD that was given to me buy my laptop manufacture ( Toshiba A50) One of my friends told me to boot the computer from the recovery CD and choose the repair windows. but I am afraid if I do this I will loose my files in my hard disk, if it get formatted!! can this happen. or can I repair my windows still keeping my files in the hard disk as my friend told me? Any other Ideas to recover my c but still keeping the files at my hard drive ?

If you recover, you will not loose your files, if you re-install, that is another story, repair wil most likely over write some critical windows settings, and may render your application useles (re-install those as well), but your data files are left intact

it sound like your vido card is failing i know this because mine did that you can try to reformant but try a older vido card driver if you have the new driver there might be sothing wong with it
Is your laptop conneted to AC power when this happens? Once you disconnect the laptop, Toshiba power settings will change energy settings to darken the screen so you can get more life out of your battery. Sometimes it switches from dark to light and dark to light again if you closed the computer off of power, and then later opened it back up connected to AC. Once you plug in your AC the light should brighten again.
