Repairing windows xp?

hi,

when i start my laptop, it says that "Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. "

and doesnt let me go into windows. so then i tried to repair windows cos i need the data stored on the computer so i cant reinstall a fresh windows installation. but when i try to repair windows, my windows xp pro partition isnt there. it just says the size of my hard drive and only gives the option of a fresh reinstallation. does anyone know how i can at least get onto windows to back up my data and then i can format the whole hard drive? thanks in advance

If you don't see the partition at all you may need to find a disk partitioning software in order to reload the corrupted partition. Try a google search to see what kind of disk partitioning software exist and which one has the option to repair broken or missing partitions. Using the standard Windows CD will not help since from what your are saying windows do not see the partition at all. I believe that you will require to use specialized partitioning software to solve your issue.
