Laptop wireless internet connectivity issues. Help!?

I have a Toshiba sattellite with Vista and wireless internet capability. Recently had internet installed in my new home and the "cable guy" had to call his boss to change settings when hooked to a high speed line. Now I am unable to get internet, even though the computer states it is communicating with the wireless router (living at a different location right now). I have tried resetting IP address and the repair options. Nothing works, and I want computer lessons badly!!! Using a friend's computer to ask this question. Will be moving in to new house soon, so may just have to wait and sort out the computer there, but I don't want to be an "electronic victim". My computer should be able to work for me when I want it to!!!!

Unfortunately, there are lots of things that can go wrong, and every wireless card has a different interface . Dlink is different than Linksys and netgear.

Probably the first thing I would try is to connect with an ethernet cable and make sure that works. If nothing else, you'll at least have wired access.

Then go into the profile and make sure that you connect in infrastructure mode, and that your security settings are right. I can't be more specific because each wireless adapter is somewhat different. Sorry.

Make sure you are obtaining an IP automatically thru DHCP.

I'm on a public pc that has disabled network config so this is a bit sketchy.

Network Connections%26gt;Properties scroll until you find TCP/IP and click the properties button. make sure the IP is blank (should not have any address listed at all, if it does that is the problem). Go to Advanced and make sure DHCP is enabled.

Restart the computer
