Antivirus programs - Good for nothing?

Why do computer antivirus programs work by first allowing the virus to infect your computer before it then deals with it, either by disinfection, quarantine, or deletion? Since some viruses cannot be altered or deleted, wouldn't it be better if the infected file never entered your computer to begin with? Hellooooooo??

Ex., Say I'm surfing the net. Suddenly, "______ has detected that ______file is infected with ______. What would you like to do? (Delete, quarantine, repair-[recommended]) So I click "repair", then, "cannot be repaired, what would you like to do?" Hmmm, try, "delete". Then, "Windows has detected that this file may be used by other programs blah blah blah which may no longer work if I delete this file blah blah blah. What would you like to do?"

I'd like to find an antivirus program that doesn't allow viruses in, period. Is there such a thing?

Its here: http://www.ubuntu.com/ and its called "Linux". People have been predicting a Linux virus for years now... and guess what? Hasn't happened. Why? Because it doesn't let them in! You don't even have to install it. If you want to, you can just run the LiveCD. This way, when you browse the net from the CD you will _never_ get a virus! :D
