This is the first time I've ever had a computer burn out on me but I don't doubt it as this is the older back-up unit in my home that gets left on for long periods. A word to the wise: Computers DO burn out so be diligent and turn them off when not in use.
This being the case, I will take it to a repair shop and get the low down. But I'm sure this will be the ever-recurring question to buy all new, versus repair old one. I've got LOTS of stored data on that computer and pics I don't want to lose. Also, money is tight with Christmas season, so I'm inclined to repair vs. buy all new again.
What in your estimation could cause a computer, plugged in good current, to simply not turn on at all? If you have knowledge in this area, your helpful recommendations or diagnosis suspicions would be most appreciated. What does it cost to repair something like this? Not on warranty anymore. Computer is about 7 years old. I bought second computer just last year so I'm current on tech.
What would be most likely component of a desk top (tower) Compaq Presario to BURN OUT? Won't turn on/7 yrs oldanti virus scan
Power supply is probably shot. Go to Newegg.com and buy another one for $20-40 depending on the brand and how much it's worth to you. Don't go all out and pay too much since it's an old system. Make sure it's the same or better specs. You don't need a 500w supply if you're replacing a 250w supply. They're very easy to install yourself.
